How does the Caged – Selective Feeder Work?
The wire caging that surrounds these feeders is designed to perform multiple functions. The most important is to protect against squirrels without moving parts, levers, springs or batteries. In other words, to simply do a good job.
Defeats Squirrels
Selective feeders are squirrel-proof in several ways. First, the size of the wire openings prevents squirrels from getting fully inside, and the diameter of the wire cage prevents the squirrels from reaching it with a paw from the outside. Second, the feeders are equipped with a “squirrel-lock” that prevents squirrels from lifting the top off the feeder, so they cannot get to the seed from that angle either. Third, most of the feeders have a wire grid bottom that is designed to let any seed spilled by bird activity to flow to the ground. This prevents seed accumulation which can be an ongoing temptation that encourages squirrels to keep looking for seed on other so-called squirrel proof designs. Songbirds pass freely through the wire cage to feed, undisturbed by four legged foes.

When you hang a Selective Feeder, squirrels will investigate (it takes them about 10 minutes of testing) and when they can’t gather seed from the feeder they move on to easier resources. Within a day or two squirrels will not even try. They revert to the ground where they belong … or move to a neighbor’s yard where pickings are easier.

Besides eliminating any seed build up that could attract squirrels, wire grid bases offer more advantages. Because seed and bird waste do not build up on the feeder, the risk of spreading bird disease is reduced.
